Done!

Sorry for the lack of updates.. but it is because I am finished my film!

Everything went out smoothly~ my film was completed on the day of the deadline (April 29) and everything- animation, colours, bgs, etc etc were all FINISHED =D

I mentioned about my composer and sound designer in my previous posts. My original composer and sound designer both dropped out on me near the end of the deadline, so the sounds and music are not made from them. It was really stressful to have people suddenly tell me that they can't work on the sounds and music but I am glad that it worked out in the end! (Thank you so much Ayaz and Nicholas!!)

So yep~ The film is currently being screened at Emily Carr till May 22. On May 21, it will be screened at the Vancity theater in Vancouver.

Although this film gave me a lot of panics and stress during the making of it, in the end I am very glad I worked on it. It was really worth the effort and I can finally said that I have tried my best and completed a film in my final year of university =)

Now I just need to build my portfolio and hopefully find a good job

UPDATE:

Right now I am just struggling to finish my film. I still have work from other classes which is not really helping.. but I just have one more scene of animation to finish, which I am aiming to finish by this Sunday... aiming. After I still have 26 backgrounds to make.. which I have no idea how I will get done. And then I need to colour the animations.. Omg.

The sound mix is pretty much finished. My sound designer is still tackling one particular sound, but that is about it.

Since I have not finished my animation yet, I have not mailed two of my voice actors with my animations that needs voices yet... which is Richard and Lay's voice actors. I promised them that I will be mailing them this Friday with all the scenes that needs voice so they can have at least a week and a half to work on the voices.
My composer if still working on school stuff, but he has worked on the music for the beginning sequence (which in the trailer) and will soon be able to tackle the other music in my film.

So yea.. I am just crazy stressed right now.. and time to get back to animation

Updating again for class #3

Ok so here is what is going on... Well I pretty much update at least once a week, but this is for class so here is the summary of what went on and what is going to happen..

I am going to try my best to finish all the animation this month.. I feel like it might go up to the first week of April till I finish (Mid March will be impossible for me.. especially since I have 2 other classes), but.. at least I'm sure I will finish all the animation. As for colouring, my helpers are all busy with school so I actually have not been getting any coloured scenes back since the semester started.. but 2 of my friends did say they will be able to help me.. one starting in March and one after April 14, so I am thankful for that. I am going to start my poster soon (which I still need to know the size it has to be in) since I need to do an event poster for Illustration class. I thought I should hit two birds with one stone with that cause seriously, I am extremely stressed about EVERYTHING..

For the music and sounds... I got my first pass for my child scene music and I thought it sounded great. I am still waiting on the street scenes and ending credits music. My composer said that it would be ready on Feb 27th, but I think he might just be busy with school.. so if nothing turns up by Sunday, I will be contacting him. As for sound designer, like I said in my previous posts, he is too busy this semester so he will have no time to work on my film, but he found a new sound designer for me. I will be meeting with the new sound designer on Wednesday.. I hope everything will turn out well.

For voices, I am going to start contacting my first 2 voice actors for very soon. I will be contacting young Richard's voice actor this week and Bill the next. Since I am still working on the animation for Richard and Lay... I probably have to wait till the beginning of April to contact them. I think Richard's animation will be finished first, so his voice actor will be contacted hopefully near the end of March.

So that is it for the update! If I am missing anything please tell me =]

And for this weeeek--

So yesterday I was really bummed out about the sound design thing. I decided that I will start recording sound by the middle of March if I have not found a sound designer by then.
Thing is, I am still quite behind in my animation, so that really stressed me out.

Anyways the schedule for this week (till Wednesday):

-Edit in the walk cycle for the pinning scene (scene 1) [DONE]

-Try and finish the animation for scene 3 [Impossible now =/ Just 2 more parts]

- 3 more comics [2 DONE]

- 3 illustrations  (bg with characters) [1 DONE]

- Update blog for class [DONE]

Omg. I so need a break after grad film.

So....

My sound designer won't have time to do sound for my film.. I am kind of really screwed.
He's really busy with school this semester so I understand, I was lucky enough to learn some sound stuff from him.. but man LMAO..
I was in a wreck today after hearing that, cause I understand how much work sound is. Doing this REALLY isn't as easy as people think it is. It is so much work.. I'm going absolutely insane, so I totally crashed today. Crashed as in my mood just dropped, like I am so stressed out and tired about this.

I really. REALLY need a sound person.

I probably should scout out for one asap.. if I can't find one in time, I guess I will be doing this myself

[Edit]: My previous sound designer just contacted me yesterday and introduced me to a new sound designer!! Yay ;v; So much weight off my chest.. I'm gonna see him this Wednesday~ I hope things will go well :>

GOT A COMPOSER

My sister's friend, Fluteman Chang, will be composing for my film =D!! He did a sample for the first 35 seconds of my film and it sounded like real film music... FFFFF- Love it. So excited!! ;v;

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

For the following week...

To do (Till Wednesday):

-LOL CHANGE OF PLAN. GET TIME LOCKED VERSION OF REEL TO SOUND DESIGNER BY WEDNESDAY. It turns out that his school changed the schedule so the reel is now due a week early... well it will make me work faster. [Will finish today]

- The means.. FINISH tight drafts for both scene 8 and 9 [ALL DRAFTS DONE.]

- Edit the child pinning scene (just the draft first) [DONE]

[Comics and Illustration will be worked on after I get the reel to Damon]

[Saturday booked for a birthday. It was fun =D]

I just contacted my sound designer and potential composer.. I hope everything will work out fine. I had my critique today and overall it was alright. People suggested me to take parts out but right now I am about.. neeehh about it.. personally I think it makes more sense if I leave everything in and the film will not feel rushed, but some people think it can be cut down more. I don't really know what to do any more to be honest. I might just go with what I have right now, but I do like the fact that I won't need to animate so much if I take them out.. I am just worried that it might seem rushed.. Well I took out scene 5 from the film as a test and I think if I end up taking it out, I WILL need to end up changing a couple of other scenes to make it work. I will keep it and see how people feel about it. At the moment, I know scene 8 and 9 will be pretty good to go. The class did say I don't need Lay in the end anymore... (even though I was told to bring him back last semester), but the thing is.. then I don't know where (**-Spoiler Alert-**) the paint cans would come from... even though it may not be important right now, I think that question will eventually come up if I took Lay away.

In the end it is my film, but I want to best for it.. I will see what I can do, when March comes around, I will start on the animation of scene 8 and 9 first, because I think I will be going with that ending (I'll admit it.. I became a bit attached to it LMAO.. C'mon it's almost March.. I can be a bit attached right? XD)

Update for Class #2

We are supposed to have an update for Feb 9 but I want to do it first LMAO..
I actually update this blog quite often so I am not sure if it would be any different. It just says "blog update".. so here goes:

Currently.. I do think it is hard to animate cause of all the stress I have. I need to get a time locked version of my film to my sound designer by the end of February.. and honestly, I am not sure if I can make it. I hope he is willing to do slight edits, cause I think like.. 75% the timing WILL change in the end. It won't be anything major. Just slight changes.

My animation is about 50% done right now and my backgrounds is like.. maybe 47%.. around there.

Luckily I have a digital illustration class that allows me to work on film stuff. This will push me to do more work. I will be able to finish 4-5 more coloured backgrounds with characters for the next assignment. I will also be able to start my grad film poster in that class.. so I am stressed but at the same time excited about how I can hit two birds with one stone. Then I can for sure graduate in May (Yay)!

Right now I am just doing some tight drafts (tight drafts as in drafts that are more timed than roughies.. I mostly just do rough.. roughs and animate from there.) I don't know how far I can get but I will try my best. I am trying to finish scene 3's timed version by Wednesday... TRYING.

I have just cast my voice actors for all of my characters recently.. *EDIT* Everyone replied and the cast is confirmed *v* I'm so happy~

For composer... My sister's friend still haven't contacted back yet, so I am waiting for that. If he backs out or whatever, I will most likely just buy 1-3 songs from 5Alarm, cause that would be the easiest way to go.

My mood right now... frustrated. Stressed. I get more annoyed easily these days cause of all this.... happening.. so if I look pissed, or act pissed, I am sorry.. I try not to but this thing really is eating me. And funny thing is I have been slightly breaking out even though I have already went through acne treatment. This shows how much pressure I am currently under.

My other classes.. Webcomic and digital Illustration.. Webcomic is relaxing but also.. so much work.. 5 comic pages every two weeks.. Mmm.. But it's ok, it forces me to draw something else. I just finished the last of the five for this week yesturday, so now I can just animate... Yay.....
Digital Illustration.. a lot of work too, but at least I can work on my film stuff for some of my assignments. Thankful for that.

I think that is it for Feb 9's update. I hope I am not missing anything

Friday, February 4, 2011

This week

My stress level right now? about 85%. 85. yep. When it hits 100%, that's when I am going to cry and animate at the same time LMAO..
I didn't really animate these past few days.. I think I got a bit fed up. I will get back to it tomorrow though.
I checked with the office today and made sure I am graduating this May... so that is exciting. I got feedback from Darren after and they were all really great critiques. He told me to add more elements.. which.. to be honest, I wanted to try and avoid, but he just made it so much better.. so I think I will try and add those in.

Check list till Wednesday:

-FINISH SCENE 3.5'S ANIMATION... omg.. I just did not know how to approach it.. OTL"" [DONE FINALLY.]

-Finish tight drafts for scene 3

- Comics [DONE]

-Blog update for class [DONE]

- 4 more drafts for illustration class? [DONE]

- Cast voice actors + contact [Done and CONFIRMED.Yay!! so excited *v*]

Cast:
Young Richard: Topleka

Richard: Neo_skywalker

Lay: Ryusuke

Bill: Edwyn

....-sigh-. Kind of overwhelmed.

Voice Auditions

I am going to sound like a pervert, but it is a compliment so it should be fine-- a lot of the voices sounds very handsome.
Sorry, but I had to say it LMAO. I hope it's not odd or impolite..

All the auditions so far are all so great... It is not even the deadline yet and I am already battling between some of the voices.. It makes me kind of sad that I can only choose one for each character, cause there are multiple voices that seems to fit a certain character LMAO. I'm gonna have a real hard time casting the voice actors on the second of February XD, hopefully some of my friends can help me with this ;v;~ -looks at the ol' crew-

Update for Class!

This post is for ANIM 420 Senior Animation II class

Since I started my blog for this film last semester, I am just going to link to some of my previous posts' pictures. If you are not in my class, you can just ignore this since it is a bit of a repeat XD:

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Wow. I believe I am supposed to update more..

Well.. I have just been animating.. and I am behind ;__;
I think I need to find voices for Richard, Lay and Richard's boss very soon.. I think Lay would sound like College Andy from Toy Story, but I'm not sure how I would describe Richard and his boss' voice =I""

Anyways, I will post some screen shots soon (I need to pick the ones without spoilers)

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!! In the main time, have some Mario Brothers :>

What Now Mang?

I had my critique again last week from my class... annddd my story is now good to go =)
The ending was stronger and no one had a problem with it which made me really happy. Except they suggested me to bring the boss back.. but the problem with that is then it won't end as a full circle. So I think I might hold that off.. and maybe after I finish the film, it can be like an after scene XDD I'll see how it goes, cause I was considering that ending before =)
I have no idea if people are going to critique it more after wards... but at least for now, I know it is working. My reel is about 4 minutes.. So I am predicting my film will be about 5 minutes in the end (including credits).. HA. Only cause the scenes are longer after I animate it.. and I have a few office scenes which have to be slow paced to catch the boring atmosphere.. I guess it's alright.. but 5 minutes is quite long. Quite long as in I don't know if I will be able to finish it. Hopefully I will be Okay..

Stressed. I have to admit.

Character Biography Worksheet- Richard

My teacher gave us a worksheet to fill out to go more in depth with our characters.. so I will fill out Richard's Bio first =):

Name: Richard Yang

Age: 25 (about)

Gender: Male

Childhood: Normal, but never really got to go out and play as much as the other children. Mostly stuck at home reviewing for school work, studying, and getting tutored. He didn't really had the time to do things he really love... or it was not encouraged by his father. On a Sunday morning, he would wake up extra early to draw a bit and watch some tv before he would have to start reviewing again in the afternoon.

Family, friends: Lived with his mom and dad (moved out now). No siblings. He has a few friends from elementary and university, but none are that close to him... except for one elementary friend that used to ask him for help on his homework (Stephen, 24.) He is very quiet, so not a lot of people got to know him.

Era: Now..? XD

Ethnic Background: Asian from Taiwan

Religion: None (Athiest), but he is very respectful of other people's beliefs

Profession: Just a normal business man, dealing with company sales and products. His position is high enough for the boss to take him to meetings to deal with clients from other companies. But most of the time he just needs to keep track of files/customers, sort them, stamp dates and approvals, and etc.

Income: Very slightly higher than average

Dreams: Deep inside, he really wanted to draw. He thought he did not know what to do, so he followed the most commonly chosen path. He still wants to draw, but he believes he cannot escape from reality, he needs income.

Goals/Ambition: For his job, he feels pretty dead about it. He would like to move up, but he could care less if he moves up or not... since he will pretty much be doing the same things anyways.
Meaning.. if it happens, yay! if not, meh~

Morals: He's a good guy. He'll follow whatever rules that are set down... but he is human and sometimes he unconciously drifts away. He still has a bit of child-like personality in him.

Physical Health: Great. Though his back hurts sometimes from sitting the whole day...

Hygiene: A bit of a clean/neat freak. The kind of guy that would bring sanitizers around just in case.

Diet: He mostly makes easy stuff like a turkey sandwich for work, some salted/sweetened crackers for nomnoms. At home for dinner, he cooks some rice with egg on top, a bit of light dishes like stir fried lettace and a bit of pork and some soup if he wants to be "fancy." Mostly he cooks more than he can eat so he can save it for like 1 or 2 more nights. If he's really tired, he just makes instant noodles.. he prevents that cause it is unhealthy but he can't lie to himself that he loves those seafood cups.

...Why am I going so deep for what he eats? LMAO

Sex Life: LMAO none. He is still single. He had crushes before but he tends to be hush hush about it.

Intelligence: Always in the tops (like mostly first or second place... rarely third or fourth.)

Education: University graduate. Completed Masters.

Need/Purpose: To somehow get out of his daily routine and do something he loves again, but he still needs to keep in mind of paying for his monthly electricity bill and groceries..

Weaknesses: Day dreams when he gets extremely bored and forgets about what he was doing. Too quiet and shy sometimes and that he ends up not being able to interact with the people he wants to. Being oblivious to what he really wants in life. Sometimes he doesn't know how to express his true feelings.

Stereotype/Archetype: A typical Asian that is really good in academics LMAO..

Obstacles: To realize what is more important in his life and follow what he loves.

Values: Family, grades, job, and income.

Sense of Humour: His unconscious clumsiness

Fears: Getting scolded by his parents when something goes wrong. His boss. Making a mistake when filing information. PILES of work, going over time. His own "imperfection." Flying cockroaches... cause they are just too sudden and dirty.

Environment (they feel comfortable in): Alone in the comfort of his own home. Hates going to work and going to a place with too many people.

Self-View: He is confident about his abilities, but there is always a part of him that makes him kind of anxious and paranoid. Asks too many "what ifs" some times. He strives for perfection and always thinks he needs to improve in something. He wants to find the thing that is missing in his life.

Nocturnal Habits: He normally sleep around 10pm or 11pm, but sometimes he thinks so much when he is trying to sleep that he ends up falling asleep around 12-2am.

Flaws: His inability to stand up for what he really wants to do and express himself.

Talent: Arts, his crazy oganization skills, noticing tiny details.

Addictions: None, but he has a secret addiction for hard fruit candies, that he prevents himself from buying them everytime he goes grocery shopping... and those damn gummy bears.

A little back story of what inspired this film (Long post is long)

I have wanted to be an artist ever since I watched my first cartoon.
My mom even told me that when I was around 1, I knew how to work the video tape player to watch my favorite cartoons.
My favorite subject was always, of course.. art. That being said, in elementary, I was pratically shit in all other subjects LMAO
Although I was extremely quiet and not exactly the funnest person to talk to, my drawings could always spark up some conversations with others.

That was what made me keep drawing.

But of course there is a reality. Everything I made when I was younger looked like shit of course. I would see my art very oftenly thrown away in the trash can, even though I made all that effort to make it and give it to the people I care for. That has always been very painful for me to see. Something I made being deemed as trash.

Even when we had those class presentations of "what you want to be when you grow up," I would obviously answer, "artist."

The response from my teacher: "Don't they have very minimal income?"

It has always been like that since I could remember. To others, being an artist is not a pratical job.
Everyone else, what ever they say... fireman, police, singer, etc. The teacher would be like "that is a great goal."

But being an artist. To them, it is only a hobby.

I still wanted to be one though, even though I didn't know what kind.
It was my dream.

But with all the other school subjects, was being an artist really encouraged? I understand it was necessary to truly realize what you want to do, but... even things like being a "leader" in high school. What was the requirement? The BEST grades. A's, tops.
It has always been Academics. Academics. Academics.

I wasn't that bad in academics and I had high enough grades to go into SFU or UBC business. But it wasn't exactly outstanding.... All the students around me was incredibly competitive in academics. I am a competitve person... especially I feel "challenged," so being the idiot I am, it bothered me when people were doing better than me and literally shoving their grades in my face.

That said, my wish to become an artist died a bit at that time. All my time was occupied by academic homeworks. But I was not happy at all and I was too stupid to realize why.

In high school I was also in a kind of relationship, or puppy love in you will. When I was going into grade 12, I talked to my boyfriend about how I wanted to try applying for Emily Carr and go into arts. Like everyone else, he said arts was just a hobby and I should consider doing something more "pratical."

Being the girly shit I was, I started kind of sobbing like a useless bee, and he was literally like "You are crying.. AGAIN? -roll eyes-"

He said this other guy that was better than me couldnt even get it, so I would not stand a chance.

Even one of the person I cared most for thought it was unreasonable, So I highly considered going into business. In fact, I was prepared to apply for it.

For what my family thought about going into arts.. My dad kind of wanted me to reconsider, but are still respectful to my decisions. My mom and sister said go ahead. And I believe my brother also thought it will get me no where.

A great thing happened to me BEFORE I had to apply though, my boyfriend at that time finally dumped me.
And it was at that time that I was like "what have I been doing?" I didn't even had the balls to do what I really love and was lingering between the shit thoughts of others. I forgot what I wanted to do.

Funny thing is in the most important year, grade 12... I started not giving much shit for academics. I still took everything but I wouldnt bawl over a bad mark. I think that year was the year that I finally developed a personality.

And I say that because after the break up, I was finally like "No. This is what I want to do. And I will PROVE that I will get somewhere doing something I love."
Rather than doing a job I hate and only doing it just cause I need money to live, I will be doing something I love and earn money having fun.

Just because others cant do it, they think you can't do it too and try to pull you down with them. People should do what they love before they realize it is too late to turn back.

I ended up pursuing my dream and I did not regret it even for a second.
